Based on Hugh Piggotts’ Axial Flux designs

Join us for a hands-on course in Cornwall and learn how to build a Hugh Piggot-style axial-flux wind turbine—a reliable, efficient turbine perfect for off-grid energy. Whether you want to build your own turbine or contribute to a community project, we have an option for you.
These small wind turbines are designed for simplicity, using easily sourced materials. Wood is carved for the blades, while copper wire is wound into coils and embedded in resin to form the stator. Magnets are fixed to steel plates with resin and bolted to a car wheel hub and the turbine blades, creating a maintenance-free alternator. The frame and boom are welded from tubing and angle iron, and the entire assembly is mounted on a tower and turns into the wind. A clever furling system ensures the turbine remains safe during high winds.

We are offering two course options.
Option 1: Build for a Community Organisation
Duration: 4 days
What you’ll do: The course group will build one turbine and a set of blades, (tower not included) which will be donated to a local community organisation to set up and use.
Cost: ~£500.00
Ideal for: Those interested in turbine technology and in gaining the skills to build their own turbine at a later date.
Option 2: Build Your Own Turbine
Duration: 5 days
What you’ll do: Build your own axial-flux wind turbine and a set of blades from scratch (tower not included).
Cost: ~£1000
Ideal for: Those who want to take home a fully functional turbine for their own use.
Skills You’ll Learn
These courses cover the practical skills needed to build your own wind turbine, including:
✔ Metalwork fabrication and welding – cutting, shaping, and joining metal components.
✔ Electrical engineering – wiring the alternator, understanding circuits, and testing output.
✔ Resin casting – encapsulating coils and sealing components for durability.
✔ Woodwork – designing and carving blades for optimal performance.
